Meet Sevinj, courageous, bold and creative.
A year ago, I was getting ready for my travels to Azerbaijan, which unfortunately have been cancelled due to my health issues. Somewhere between still stubbornly digging for cheap flights to Azerbaijan, and hospital appointments – I have emerged myself in learning all about Baku’s upcoming artists, new age influencers, and current creative sphere. In attempt to learn more about Baku’s creative community, I started to listen @smthfortea podcast, and couldn’t help but notice the cover of the podcast. A beautiful illustration caught my lingering eye, and it was by Sevinj.
Sevinj who goes under ‘@hidden.seva’ has multiple illustrations and graphic works exploring her own Azerbaijani heritage through traditional pieces, vibrant colours and personal struggles. It’s impossible not to stalk her whole Instagram page and not leave wanting a piece of her work framed at home. And that was exactly what I have done. I have purchased one of Sevinj’s masterpieces last summer, and of course as a fellow artist I wanted to get to know Sevinj a little more.
After only few exchanges of messages, I’ve learnt that Sevinj was actually born and raised in Odesa, Ukraine and has only recently moved to Azerbaijan seeking safety due to the current war. Courageously, she has been sharing her personal struggles, traces of trauma and cultural identity through her page. Although, Sevinj has been creating illustrations for printing and various publications, participated in several exhibitions and various creative projects – selling her work internationally is a little more complicated from where she is based. Which is why I stepped in and offered to help.
With pride, honour and absolute pleasure – Arty Numpty will be selling work by Sevinj Abbasova @hidden.seva from Monday and helping Sevinj continue her legacy. Arty Numpty ships worldwide!
